Sevilla, 30 June 2025, Spain, Luxembourg and Norway with total pledge of 158.8 million Euro + 2 billion NOK send a clear message for the whole international health architecture to work even better and closer because there is a real need for the agenda of the reform of the global fund to build up a strong health system as aligned with the Lusaka Agenda which to fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
José Manuel Albares – Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain: ”I announce 145 million Euro of contribution to the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Multilateralism is the right answer. There is no other option or answer to fight global problems. Today, in Sevilla, we are together to defend multilateralism to defend development aid, and as the alliance between the north and the south and particularly the private sector and the public sector. Together we can face all those challenges, we believe we can give a better future to 3,000 million people around the world that live in countries that pay more interest in their debt than their health sector or in the educational sector. Today we are here today that countries such as Luxembourg, Norway, Spain and the Global Foundation, we are not going to stop doing what we are doing. We believe in multilateralism, we believe in development aid, and we believe that we can fight effectively and make disappear AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. We will be with the people and those countries that need our support to create their own national health system.”
Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Minister of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, said: “when I see the reductions in most of the countries done today, this fund turns so important because to obtain the right to a health condition, to have injections and vaccines becomes luxury items, and it is depending on where you were born and growing up. I believe every person has the same right to health. For this effect, I announce 13.8 million Euro pledge”.
Åsmund Grøver Aukrust – Minister of International Development of Norway said,” we are living in very dramatic times now, and it is in time for us to really step up for international solidarity for working together to protect the multilateral cooperation”.
Peter Sands – CEO of Global Fund said: “If you want a demonstrable demonstration of translating the words into action; the commitments, you have just heard from Spain, Luxembourg and Norway is a very practical demonstration of the commitment to multilateralism of common humanity of care for the poorest and most marginalized people in the world. The fund was created in 2002 and up to now has saved over 65million lives equivalent to 65% lower than when it was started. It means progress is possible. We can make a massive difference to people’s lives and to save people, and we must not take it for granted. Carelessness is a formidable adversary to these diseases. If we slow down or turn our eyes away, they will come back. This is the reason why the global fund’s eighth replenishment is taking place in the 2nd half of this year is important and why the announcements today as early commitments as part of that replenishment are vital. Together we can save another 23 million lives over the next 3 years and bring down even further. To end the HIV is one of the SDG3 commitments which is achievable”.
