2026 Nobel Peace Prize goes to Navi Pillay
Navanethem (Navi) Pillay wins the 2026 Noble Peace Prize — for her lifelong dedication to promoting peace and international law.
Navi Pillay spent her career in the judicial services including serving on the High Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice including serving as Human Rights advocacy at the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights including lead instrumentally in establishing that rape and sexual violence can be classified as crimes against humanity and genocide including setting precedents for prosecuting genocide based on propaganda and incitement.
The Noble Prize emphasized that the current global order faces significant challenges and that international law is necessity for peace rather than just a supplement. By awarding this prize to Pillay, the Committee aims to honour a jurist who guards the “thin red line between order and chaos” and to remind the world that peace requires justice and the rule of law.
Ms. Pillay was born under apartheid in South Africa, she became a lawyer who defended anti-apartheid activities, including Nelson Mandela.
