A Call for Unity and Human-Centred Communication
At the annual assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences Office of Social Communication (FABC-OSC) in Macau, held in conjunction with the Catholic Diocese of Macau’s 450th anniversary, Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle called for a Church that remains a sign of unity in a divided world.
He warned against using technology to manipulate information or impose uniformity. While encouraging the use of digital tools, he stressed that authentic communication is centred on Jesus Christ. Those who communicate must remain personally present rather than disappear behind a screen.
Synodality: Walking Together
Cardinal Tagle described synodality not as a new or intimidating concept, but as an ancient call to “walk together”. It is marked by:
- Communion
- Participation
- Mission
This shared journey requires placing the common good above the interests of individual groups.
Evangelization Rooted in Relationship
Authentic evangelization, he explained, is communication rooted in a covenant relationship with God—not simply the use of technology for efficiency or personal pride.
Drawing on biblical examples, including Nehemiah’s rebuilding of the wall and the writings of St. Paul, Cardinal Tagle highlighted pride and self-sufficiency as primary threats to authentic communication.
